  • Often called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS); a complication that may occur during cataract extraction in certain patients. It's characterized by a flaccid iris that "billows" in response to ordinary intraocular fluid currents. It also has a propensity to prolapse toward the area of cataract extraction during surgery, and to cause progressive pupil constriction despite procedures to prevent it. It's been associated with Flomax (tamsulosin), a selective alpha blocker widely prescribed for urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. (Tamsulosin relaxes the iris dilator muscle.)
