Perhaps ultimately from obsolete gobshite, wad of expectorated chewing tobacco or tobacco juice : gob2 + dialectal shite, excrement (from Middle English shiten, to defecate, from Old English *scītan).

    I came across it watching "My Left Foot" when a woman addresses the young protagonist. Definition comes from The Free Dictionary, though I'm not quite sure if it's accurate.
