This ecoregion has historically supported populations of wild ungulates including goitered gazelle, blue sheep, wild yak, Asiatic wild ass, and argali as well as predators such as brown bears, wolves and lynx, as well as the rare Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) and Przewalski's horse (Equus przewalskii).

Also found are approximately 7000 goitered gazelles (about 3000 in 1988), about 4000 Siberian ibexes, and 200 Marko-Polo argali.

The montane steppe supports a large population of wild sheep (Ovis ammon), and goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) are found on the plains in the southeast.

Three species of goitered gazelles, the Chiltan wild goat, and the Afghan urial are considered vulnerable.
