From Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, 1980: "The hovawart was famous in the Middle Ages as a watchdog, but with the vicissitudes of history, it dropped from view. Some sixty years ago, it again captured the attention of dog lovers, and from drawings and texts of the thirteenth century, it was 'reconstructed,' bred from watchdogs from the Black Forest area."
