  • Abalakov is a method of protecting oneself while ice climbing. You thread a cord through two holes in the ice, which are roughly 45 degrees to the surface and interconnect at their ends. The cord is then used as belay. It saves you from leaving expensive gear on the mountain. It is named after the Soviet mountaineer "Vitaly Abalakov".
