From Middle English lis, lisse, lysse, from Old English liss, līs, līþs ("grace, favor, love, kindness, mercy, joy, peace, rest, remission, forgiveness, alleviation, salvation"), from Proto-Germanic *linþesjō, *lenþesjō (“rest”), from Proto-Indo-European *lent- (“bendsome, resilient”).
