I remember this word from Snagglepuss on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, "Quickdraw McGraw." He always used to say, "Heaven to Mergatroid" as though Mergatroid were a name like "Betsy" (i.e. Heavens to Betsy). Perhaps the writers of that cartoon would have some idea as to its origin.
