  • An absolute conception of truth would oblige us to say that in the world that confronts an individual, it must be at least as if that individual's judgement were true (and not just to him), its actual truth constituting the ultimate cause (and it would make a difference if the medieval believer's hell did in fact exist!). Or, less overvaultingly, we constrain truth itself rather by what could (or must) rationally be believed given available intellectual resources.
