  • noun An African musical instrument which consists of a sounding-board of some hard wood with strips of iron, or occasionally bamboo, fastened to it so as to leave one end free to vibrate. The instrument is usually played by holding it in both hands and with the thumbs pressing down and releasing the keys, of which there are sometimes forty or more. Also called zimba.
  • noun A musical instrument of percussion, resembling a tambourine.
