  • It is nonsensical to me, since there is no way you could encode even one second of sound is as little as eight bits.

  • When first coined, presumably in 1980 by the Washington Post, it was spelled "sound bite." I don't believe the spelling here was ever meant to be synonymous, though it's not difficult to see why it would have been picked up.
