An inkhorn term for a hard-of-hearing person. From the Latin surdus (in active sense) deaf, (in passive sense) silent, mute, dumb, (of sound, etc.) dull, indistinct + -aster, from Latin, meaning expressing incomplete resemblance (usually pejorative).
