  • Urban dictionary has a defintion going back to 2006. which is to publicly disrespect, or trash talk publicly.

    a google phrase search has Tess of the D'urbervilles page 386 "Above, Jupiter hung like a full-blown jonquil, so bright as almost to throw a shade. " but that's a different definition from the new Urban Dictionary.

    Another totally different version is seen in the 1800's. Dictionary of Latin synonymes: for the use of schools and private students page 347 "Adumbrare throwing shade upon something taking the shade of something that is making a hasty drawing sketching the chief traits"
