qroqqa commented on the word zudecca
Venetian variant of Giudecca, the island on which the ghetto lay. Thus also for ghettos in once Venetian-ruled lands, e.g. that of Chaniá in Crete.
Anne Michaels in Fugitive Pieces uses the spelling zudeccha, but she has a weakness for spurious H, writing also 'stifhado' for 'stifado', and Waltzing Mathilda.
etym.: L. judaica "Jewish"
