HTTP/1.1 RFC says that if an Accept-Encoding header is not present, the server MAY assume the client accepts any encoding, so we were having many sites send us gzip content even though we did not support it.

Contrary to what is documented here, wp_remote_get () will send an 'Accept-Encoding' header, requesting gzip compressed or a deflated body, regardless if you set the argument 'decompress' to false (true by default).

One thing to highlight which is what took me a bit of time is the "serverVariables" entry in that rule that basically is overwriting the Accept-Encoding header, the reason I do this is because if you do not remove that header then the response will likely be compressed (Gzip or deflate) and Output Rewriting is not supported on that case, and you will end up with an error message like:

When loading the 'convert' page, if I remove the 'Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate' from the request the page loads OK.
