Her commercial duties -- her tax on settlers -- the harvest of judicial fees, obtained from the dependant allies -- the chief profits from the mines -- all rested upon the maintenance of peace: even the foreign tribute, the most productive of the Athenian resources, might fail at once, if the Athenian arms should sustain a single reverse, as indeed it did after the fatal battle of Aegospotamos [283].
