Banff's Vermillion Lakes is one of Canada's oldest known archaeological sites, at 10,500 B. P, and some pre-historic artifacts in Jasper have been dated to 9,000 B.P. European fur traders and explorers first reached the area in the 1800's seeking transportation routes through the high mountain passes.
