Coccyzus

As endemic birds of the archipelago (San Andrés and Providencia) we have: Coccyzus minor abbotti (species of cuckoo), Anthracothorax prevostii hendersoni (the only hummingbird on the archipelago), and two passeriforms, Tiaris bicolor grandior (grass bird) and Elaenia martinica cinerascens.

Some 87 bird species have been recorded in the nominated site including three endemics, Cocos Island cuckoo Coccyzus ferrugineus, Cocos Island flycatcher Nesotriccus ridgwayi and Cocos Island finch Pinaroloxias inornata.

The western yellow-billed cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) and the Yellow-breasted Chat (Icteria virens), as well as several other riparian specialists, have all declined significantly in California due to loss of riparian forests.

Of the seven species of land birds, the Cocos cuckoo (Coccyzus ferrugineus), the Cocos flycatcher (Nesotriccus ridgwayi) and the Cocos finch (Pinaroloxias inornata) are also endemic.

Other bird species associated with mangroves include spotted sandpiper (Actitis macularia), roseate spoonbill (Ajaia ajaja), green heron (Butorides virescens), belted kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon), mangrove cuckoo (Coccyzus minor), mangrove warbler (Dendroica petechia), and reddish egret (E. rufescens).
