This trilogy not only features the regeneration of Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor into Peter Davidson’s Fifth Doctor, but also (particularly in Logopolis and Castrovalva uses some concepts that you would normally expect to find in a hard science fiction novel, such as shunting excess entropy into another universe; having a TARDIS inside a TARDIS and the Escher-esque structure of Castrovalva.

I was just watching one of the extras on the DVD of "Logopolis," Tom Baker's last episode, a bit from a talk show with an interview with Peter Davison, after he was cast as Baker's replacement but before he actually started shooting.

The result of this has been that I am now least well versed in the Davison era, so I have been compensating a bit - Logopolis, Tom Baker's last story, ends with Davison's first though wordless appearance in the role, and Kinda and Snakedance are an interesting pairing, featuring the only returning monster of the Davison era (guest appearances in The Five Doctors aside).

This huge narrative, partly written by Douglas Adams, proved successful and for several seasons the show continued to pursue larger narratives, such as a 'trilogy' of serials two years later where the TARDIS was trapped in another dimension called E-Space with the purpose and fate of E-Space then revealed in the season-ending, Doctor-replacing episode Logopolis.
