- n. A genus of dicotyledonous polypetalous plants of the natural order Loaseæ. It is distinguished by a one-celled ovary with an indefinite number of ovules, by having no scales on the corolla, and by alternate leaves. About 40 species are known, which are found in the warmer and tropical regions of America, especially in the western part. They are herbs or small shrubs, usually with rigid tenacious barbed hairs, leaves which are mostly coarsely toothed or pinnatitld, and yellow or white flowers, which are cymose or solitary.
