  • noun Any of a family of industrial compounds produced by chlorination of biphenyl, used as insulating materials in electrical equipment, including transformers and capacitors, and in various other industrial applications. PCBs were banned in the United States in 1979 and now are noted primarily as environmental pollutants that accumulate in animal tissue with resultant pathogenic and teratogenic effects.
