Returning to Britain in 1960, he was appointed musical director of the Royal National Eisteddfod, Wales (1960-62), before making his London conducting debut, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, at the Festival Hall in 1963, conducting a programme of Mozart and Mahler (the Ninth Symphony).
