- A city of western New York on the Niagara River north-northwest of Buffalo. Occupied by the French in the 1680s, captured by the British in 1759, and settled by Americans in 1805, it was held by the British during the War of 1812. Tourism is a mainstay of its economy. Population: 52,300.
