1. n. The astringent resinous husks and seeds of several leguminous trees or shrubs of South America, which are an article of commerce for their value in tanning and dyeing. In Brazil and tropical America they are the produce chiefly of Pithecolobium parvifolium (Inga Marthæ of some authors). In Chili and on the western coast they are obtained from Cæsalpinia (Balsamocarpum) brevifolia and Prosopis juliflora. Also written algarovilla.
