  1. More correctly alerion, from Old French alerion, aleiron (French alérion), from Middle Latin alario(n-), in heraldry a little eagle without beak or claws, in form suggesting L. alarius, from ala, a wing (see aisle), but prob. of other origin; perhaps ult. from Middle High German adelar, German adler, an eagle.
