Sometimes for amusement's sake, sometimes to be outrageous, sometimes because it's a pairing the fanfic author really wants to see... pairing, putting together two things to make a whole--it's like matching colors--you can pick contrasting ones or complementary ones, and some pairings are jarring, but that's interesting, and others are jarring but just awful--and the judgment of this seems pretty subjective.
