- n. A name proposed by T. Sterry Hunt in 1873, and used by the Geological Survey of Canada and by the Natural History Survey of Minnesota, for a group of iron-bearing rocks, slates, schists, and sandstones which form the middle subdivision of the Algonkian as the latter term is used by the United States Geological Survey. In Canada the group is regarded as Cambrian in age, but in the Lake Superior district, especially in Minnesota, where these rocks carry the iron ore of the Mesaba range, they are referred to the Precambrian.
