  • noun A name proposed by T. Sterry Hunt in 1873, and used by the Geological Survey of Canada and by the Natural History Survey of Minnesota, for a group of iron-bearing rocks, slates, schists, and sandstones which form the middle subdivision of the Algonkian as the latter term is used by the United States Geological Survey.
