From Middle English atenen, ateonen, from Old English *ātēonian, *ātȳnan, *ātīenan, from a- + tēonian ("to injure, irritate, slander"), and tȳnan, tīenan ("to irritate, vex, trouble, insult, revile"), equivalent to a- +‎ teen.
