From Middle English attern, from Old English ǣtren ("poisoned, poisonous, venomous"), from Proto-Germanic *aitrinaz (“poisonous”), equivalent to atter +‎ -en. Cognate with Middle High German eiterin ("poisonous"). More at atter.
