  • A family of American carnivorous quadrupeds, of the arctoid series of the order Feræ, suborder Fissipedia, and section Arctoidea procyoniformia, most nearly related to the racoons (Procyonidæ), having some superficial resemblance to the civets and genets, and therefore long supposed to represent in the new world the numerous viverrine quadrupeds of the old. It is constituted by the genera Bassaris (or Bassariscus) and Bassaricyon.
