  1. An instrument for taking soundings at sea.
  2. A simple apparatus for gaging the depth of liquids in wells and tanks. It consists of an air-tube dipping into the liquid to be measured, and an air-compressor connected both with this tube and with a reservoir of liquid into which there dips a gage-glass. When the air-compressor is worked the liquid rises in the gage until the pressure is sufficient to force air out of the bottom of the air-tube.
