- Living upon or in the bottom of the sea as distinguished from the water; submarine. Benthonic organisms are contrasted with those that are water-dwelling or planktonic. Many animals are benthonic during part of their lives and planktonic during another part. Most hydroids are fixed to the bottom, or benthonic, while the medusæ which they produce and set free swim in the water and are planktonic. See
