From Middle English bireaden, bereden, biræden, from Old English berǣdan ("to deprive, take by treachery, rob; betray; deliberate on, consult about, advise; get the better of"), equivalent to be- +‎ rede. Cognate with Old Frisian birēda, Middle Low German berāden ("to deliberate, consider").
