- A family of nemocerous dipterous insects, typified by the genus Bibio, having the prothorax much developed, no transverse thoracic suture, 7 abdominal segments, 6 to 11 antennal joints, 3 ocelli, wings without a discal cell, and the coxæ not prolonged. There are about 300 described species. The family formerly included the genus Simulium, now separated as the type of another family.
