Definitions
Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
- n. A genus of gallinaceous birds, of the family Tetraonidæ, containing especially B. betulina, the hazel-grouse of Europe, and B. umbella, the ruffed grouse, pheasant, or partridge of North America. They have a ruffle of feathers on each side of the neck, a broad fan-shaped tail, partly feathered shanks, and a small crest. They are woodland birds, noted for their habit of drumming, whence probably their name, the noise being likened to the bellowing of a bull.
