  1. n. A musical instrument having a keyboard and strings like a harpsichord or piano, in which the tones were produced by the friction of little bows or resined wheels pressed against the strings. Such an instrument is said to have been attempted about 1600 at Nuremberg, and many were constructed in the eighteenth century. Also called bow-harpsichord.
