- n. A genus of plants, of two or three species, natural order Urticaceœ, nearly allied to the mulberry, natives of eastern Asia and the Pacific islands. The paper-mulberry (B. papyrifera) and B. Kœmpferi are cultivated in China and Japan, where the bark of the young shoots is the chief material for the manufacture of paper. From the bark of the paper-mulberry is also made the tapa-cloth extensively used throughout Polynesia.
