- A name given by E. R. Lankester to the lancelets (Amphioxus) considered as a prime division of Vertebrata, contrasted on one hand with Urochorda (tunicates or ascidians), on another with Hemichorda (acorn-worms), and also with Craniota (all other vertebrates collectively).
