1. The horny sponges or Ceratoda; in Hyatt's system, the third order of the second class, Carneospongiæ, of the Poriferata or sponges; the true horny sponges, whose skeleton consists of ceratode, forming a network in the mesoderm. They are the only sponges of practical importance and commercial value. They are usually found on rocky ground or coral-reefs at a depth of not more than 75 fathoms. Also Keratoidea.
