1. In Günther's system of classification, the seventh group of Clupeidæ. The mouth is small, anterior, transverse, and toothless; the intermaxillary is juxtaposed to the upper edge of the maxillary; the abdomen is flat; and the gill-membranes are entirely united. The group is coextensive with the family Chanoidæ.
