  • noun In China, an official in charge of a hien or administrative district: in consular and diplomatic documents commonly styled district magistrate. He is responsible for the peace and order of his district, and has summary jurisdiction in civil and criminal cases. All transfers of laud must be stamped with his seal. Also written chih-hsien.
