  • noun A class of crystalline compounds, employed in medicine, obtained by the action of various oximes upon chloral: as chloral-acetaldoxime (CCl3. CHO-CH3.CH.N.OH), chloral-benzaldoxime (CCl3.CHO-C6H5.CH.N.OH), chloral-acetoxime (CCl3.CHO-(CH3)2.CN.OH), chloral-camphoroxime (CCl3.CHO-C10H16.N.OH), and others. When heated with water these compounds decompose. They are used as hypnotics.
