1. n. A white crystalline compound, C₆H₄(OH)CO.OC₆H₄Cl, obtained by the action of phosphorus pentachlorid on a mixture of ortho- and para-chlorophenol; chlorophenol salicylate; salicylic-chlorophenol-ester. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol. It differs from salol in containing an atom of chlorin in place of one of hydrogen. It is used internally as an intestinal antiseptic.
