- An order of free-swimming animalcules, with locomotive appendages consisting of one or more lash-like flagella, a supplementary more or less highly developed ciliary system, and the oral aperture usually distinct; the cilioflagellate infusorians. As instituted by Claparède and Lachmann (1858–60), the order included only the Peridiniidæ. As constituted by Saville Kent, it consists of the families Heteromastigidæ, Mallomonadidæ, and Trichonemidæ, besides the Peridiniidæ. It corresponds to the Mastigophora trichosomata of Diesing. It has been since named by Bütschli Dinoflagellata (which see).
