- n. A form of change-gear for motor-cars, in which the differing speeds of the driven shaft are secured by sliding or shifting tooth-wheels lengthwise on parallel shafts until the desired pair comes into mesh. When the driving-gear is turning and the one to be driven is moving at a different rate, the engagement of the sets of teeth takes place with a jar or clash. Sometimes called
sliding-gear transmission .
