Bustamente in Santa Fe -- H.story of an Ancient City as describing the villa in 1776, the year of American independence from British rule, as consisting of "many small ranches at various distances from one another, with no plan as to their location, for each owner built as he was able, wished to, or found convenient, now for the little farms they have there, now for small herds of clattle which they keep in corrals of stakes, or else for other reasons."
