- n. A furnace, oven, kiln, or retort used for reducing bituminous coal to coke; a coking-oven. The essential features are a chamber to contain the coal, with openings at various points for the admission of air, which can be closed as required during the progress of the operation, and a furnace or fire-chamber to supply the necessary heat. In some forms the gases which are evolved are utilized as fuel for the oven itself, or for a steam-boiler, or for some similar purpose, or they are condensed as tar, etc.
