- n. A genus of swifts, or small swallow-like birds, of the family Cypselidæ. They build the so-called edible birds' nests, much prized among the Chinese, which consist largely of inspissated saliva secreted by the large salivary glands characteristic of the genus. There are numerous species, of Asia, Africa, and Polynesia, the best-known of which is C. esculenta. Some of them are known as salanganes.
