- noun In a war-ship, a compartment with sound-proof walls below the protective deck, containing a steering-wheel, the switchboards for telephones and speaking-tubes, and engine and steering telegraphs, which forms a central station for the interior signaling apparatus and other means of communication throughout the ship.
