  1. from Late Latin contesseratio (n-), contracting of friendship, from contesserare, past participle contesseratus, contract friendship by means of square tablets, which were divided by the friends in order that in after times they or their descendants might recognize each other, from Latin com-, together, + tessera, a tablet: see tessera.
