Giving amyl nitrite promotes methemoglobin formation, which combines with the toxic cyanide to form cyanmethemoglobin, making it non-toxic.
Hemoglobin levels were assessed using either a CBC5 Coulter Counter (Coulter Corporation, Miami) or by the cyanmethemoglobin method with use of a colorimeter (Corning Inc, Corning, NY).
